05 Sep Why This Format? Current Life, Future Forward Thinking While Looking Back at the Past
I’m not unique, many before me have wanted a blog or podcast for quite some time before taking action. However, I couldn’t find a deep enough desire to push myself over the edge to actually do something about it. When I finally reached the point where I was ready to get going, I realized I wanted to share a lot of lessons from our journey that weren’t documented live. In contemplation on how to navigate and deal with that missed opportunity, it occurred to me that I could simply write, record, and post about current life and how it might tie back to previous decisions or indecision that took place in the past. As I write this intro post to our site, we’ve just experienced the stock market crash fallout as Coronavirus took hold of the United States in the form of shut downs and shelter in place orders. I have said to my wife I’m fairly confident that there’s going to be a “shelter in place” or “2020” board game with all sorts of buzz words that surely will trigger us for decades to come. I digress, but feel free to make your attempts to monetize the concept, I’m not passionate about it but I’ll probably play the game. Getting back on track, we are experiencing a recession which may turn out to be one of the shortest recessions on record for a number of reasons that I’m not going to begin to pretend to explain. What we are seeing now are countless young investors making their mark in the stock trading world, as they look in the rearview mirror and say to themselves, I missed out in 2009, I’m not missing out again. This macro event is quite symbolic of my goals for myFIcapsule, capture today’s storylines on a micro and macro level, tie them back to history and demonstrate what we did or didn’t learn from the past.
With that said I’ve decided on a binge style release of the website, posts and eventually podcasts. Who doesn’t love Netflix for releasing entire seasons of their TV shows all at once versus the antiquated week to week model we grew up on? While one person might take it on in bite sized pieces, others will lay awake until three a.m. watching their current title of choice and wake up at seven a.m. paying for terrible decision making and stumbling into work half awake. While I won’t attempt to compare this blog and site to that of successful TV moguls built to capture an audience, I apologize if I contribute to a long black hole session on your PC when you could be out being productive.
Hindsight is 20/20 is probably one of the most widely used clichés in the world, and while it’s the year 2020 as I write this it’s fitting to use a rarely found numerical pun. (Is that a thing?) I am completely comfortable making mistakes or owning up to mistakes made in the past if it can benefit the reader. Making mistakes is likely the greatest form of teaching, while some teach smaller seemingly insignificant lessons, others are major wake up calls and lessons that may shape a large portion of our future. This capsule and reflect on history will further demonstrate clarity on how our thoughts and previous experiences can and inevitably will shape our future decisions.
In closing the last and final reason I decided on the binge format was to develop consistency, build a list of content to release to all but ensure I don’t fail to produce content. By taking time to map out what I wanted this thing to look like and where it was going, I found myself empowered to begin writing aggressively to get this content prepared to launch along with an arsenal of subjects in the pipeline for the future. Thank you for coming on this journey with me past and present!
